Professions

Five crafting professions and one gathering profession: what each one makes, how to level it, where the materials come from and which pieces are worth it at level 45.

The professions at a glance

Aion 2 separates gathering and crafting. Gathering uses a single skill, Essence Extraction. Crafting happens in five professions.

ProfessionMakesWeapon for
BlacksmithingLongswords, greatswords, daggers, maces, guards; orichalcum ingots and Balaur hornsTemplar, Gladiator, Assassin, Cleric
ArmorsmithingAll seven armour pieces: chest, pants, helmet, shoulders, gloves, boots, cape; Balaur leathernone
HandicraftingBows, staffs, necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets; Balaur scalesRanger, Chanter
AlchemySpellbooks, orbs, potions, scrolls, manastones and soul stonesSorcerer, Spiritmaster

Some English guides call two professions Tailoring and Jewelcrafting. Those are the internal names from the game files; in the game they are called Armorsmithing and Handicrafting.

Unlocking and levels

Crafting and gathering open at level 10, long before the endgame. The profession masters are in Verteron for the Elyos and in Altgard for the Asmodians.

  • Each profession and Essence Extraction level separately from 1 to 100.
  • You learn recipes automatically as soon as your level is high enough. There are no recipe books to buy.
  • At level 50 you’re capped until you pass the profession’s Ascension Trial. After that you continue as an advanced crafter up to 100.
  • Elyos and Asmodians have mirrored recipe lists: different names, same stats and item levels.

The Ascension Trial at level 50

  1. Accept the quest. Each profession has its own “[Ascension] Specialised Technique” quest, for example “…: Blacksmithing”. It appears on its own.
  2. Craft the test piece. For Blacksmithing that’s the beginner’s smithing hammer, made from six orichalcum ingots and three Odyle. The other professions have their own test piece.
  3. Turn it in to the master. The reward is the promotion to advanced; your level then continues to 100.

How a craft works

While you craft, two bars race each other, one for success and one for failure. If the success bar fills first, the item is created. If the failure bar wins, the materials are lost. Getting attacked during the process also counts as a failure.

How good your chances are depends on the gap between your level and the recipe’s level. A True Dragon Lord piece requires level 55: right at 55 it succeeds about 67.5% of the time, at level 100 about 94%. Simple recipes are already much higher at their minimum level.

Combos and “Splendent”

When a recipe succeeds, many recipes trigger a combo 25% of the time. It rolls once more with its own chance. If that works, instead of the normal result you get the better variant with the prefix “Splendent”, for example a “Splendent Orichalcum Longsword”.

These splendent pieces aren’t a bonus; they’re the actual way up: the next recipe in a gear line requires the splendent piece of the tier below as an ingredient. Without a combo you can’t progress.

The gear ladder

Every crafted weapon, armour piece and piece of jewellery except bracelets follows the same ladder. Using the Elyos longsword as an example:

Ladder stepItem levelHow it’s made
Orichalcum Longsword18Recipe from crafting level 3
Expert’s Orichalcum Longsword28From level 15, needs the splendent variant below
Artisan’s Orichalcum Longsword39From level 30, needs the splendent Expert’s variant
Artisan’s Splendent …44Only via combo, first Unique piece in the line
True Dragon Lord Longsword62From level 55, needs the splendent Artisan’s piece
Splendent True Dragon Lord …70Upgrade, or a combo while crafting
White Dragon Lord Longsword78Upgrade, needs another splendent Artisan’s piece
Splendent White Dragon Lord …86Upgrade or combo
Wise Dragon Lord Longsword94Upgrade, needs another splendent Artisan’s piece
Splendent Wise Dragon Lord …102Upgrade or combo
  • On the Asmodian side the three Dragon Lord tiers have different names. Stats and item levels are the same; look at the tier, not the name.
  • The Dragon Lord recipes for weapons, rings, chest, pants, helmet and shoulders require crafting level 55; for guards, gloves, boots, cape, necklace and earrings level 60.
  • Upgrading can’t fail. What carries over and what doesn’t is in the gear guide.
  • Crafted bracelets stop at Epic. Belt, amulet and runes can’t be crafted at all.
  • Splendent Dragon Lord pieces allow the Amp levels of the next lower item level range: one at 70, three at 86, five at 102. Loot with 70 or 86 item level takes two more levels each.

Gathering: Essence Extraction

With Essence Extraction you gather six material groups: ore, gems, wood, herbs, cooking ingredients and Odyle. Ore, gems, wood and Odyle come in four grades, herbs in two, cooking ingredients in one. Which grade you get is only decided while gathering.

  • You get three attempts per node, whether they succeed or not.
  • Here too a success bar and a failure bar race each other.
  • Odyle floats in the air. You have to fly to it and stay airborne while gathering.
  • Odyle can be turned into other gathering materials through Substance Morph, but not the other way round.

Specialisation: only two groups

Levelling Essence Extraction earns you points for passive gathering skills. There are 14 specialisation points in total for the material groups. Each group costs seven of them to max out: one for showing node locations (Seeker), three for the chance of a double yield (Plentiful Harvest), up to 30%, and three for the chance of a higher grade (Appraiser), also up to 30%. The second and third levels of the last two are only available once you’re advanced.

So you can fully develop exactly two groups. A reset costs 50,000 Kina. Because Odyle can be converted into other materials and is part of almost every recipe on the ladder, it’s the first choice for most players.

Essence Extraction Ascension Trial

Essence Extraction also stops at level 50 at first. The trial is given by Korius (Elyos, Verteron) or Alzirr (Asmodians, Altgard): you gather ruby until you get a Radiant Ruby, then bring it back. The quest itself names ruby locations; for the Elyos, for example, along the middle course of the Ellun and the ruins of the Verteron fortress, for the Asmodians Calderon Canyon and the Tranein highlands.

Where materials come from

TypeExamplesSource
GatheredOrichalcum ore, ruby, sapphire and diamond gems, Yggdrasil and Asvata wood, Odyle, herbs, cooking ingredientsNodes in the open world
Vendor goodsOrichalcum solvent, zircon hammer, inksNPC merchants, bound and not tradable
Field lootRefining stones (basic, Expert’s, Artisan’s), raw leather, spirit stoneOpen-world monsters
Dungeon materialsBalaur’s Essence, Wrathful Mind, Wrathful Will, Wrathful Ego, Artisan’s Ultimate Refining StoneExpeditions and Ludra; Balaur’s Essence also from some field monsters

The last row sets your pace. Every Dragon Lord piece needs Balaur parts that you make from Balaur's Essence: one Fine Thick Balaur Horn costs two essences and a zircon hammer. The True Dragon Lord Longsword requires 22 of these horns, i.e. 44 essences, plus the splendent Artisan’s longsword, four Artisan’s Ultimate Refining Stones, ten Wrathful Minds, nine Radiant Orichalcum Ore and five Radiant Odyle.

The Balaur parts come in three grades for the three Dragon Lord tiers. The first requires crafting level 51, the second 65 and the third 80. So crafting doesn’t replace dungeons; it processes their loot.

Most materials are tradable. But you can only buy on the market with a membership (see the beginner’s guide).

What’s worth it at 45

Crafted Dragon Lord pieces carry five stat lines instead of four. What has proven itself is to craft jewellery and weapon and get armour and guard from dungeons. There are still recipes for armour and guards. How much a piece gives and what happens to it after crafting is explained in the gear guide.

  1. Pick your weapon’s profession. Blacksmithing, Handicrafting or Alchemy, depending on your class (see the table above). Handicrafting also covers rings, earrings and necklace.
  2. Gather while levelling. Pick up Odyle and your profession’s material on the side; the nodes lie along the quest routes.
  3. Get past level 50 early. Take the Ascension Trial before you have Dragon Lord materials in hand.
  4. Rings first. Rings give levels for active skills. Then the rest of the jewellery, then the weapon.
  5. Upgrade one tier at a time. From True Dragon Lord, every piece goes step by step to 102.

Consumables

Alchemy makes intermediate manastones and soul stones from level 20, out of lesser stones, spirit stone dust and ink. Superior manastones follow from level 85 and need 30 intermediate ones as an ingredient. Cooking provides food with short stat bonuses; the strongest dishes only come with a high cooking level.

Beginner mistakes

Giving away splendent pieces

A splendent piece looks like a duplicate, but it’s the ingredient for the next tier. If you sell or dismantle it, the roll for the combo starts over.

Crafting with the wrong character

Crafted pieces bind to the character who crafts them. So your own gear has to be made by the character who will wear it.

Stuck at level 50

Without the Ascension Trial the profession doesn’t level further, and the Balaur parts from level 51 stay locked.

Scattered specialisation points

The 14 points are enough for two full material groups. Spread a bit everywhere and you won’t get the strong levels anywhere.

Crafting mid-fight

A hit cancels the process as a failure and the materials are lost. Craft somewhere quiet.

Following old guides

Many texts describe the Asian version. There, crafted pieces carry a fixed PvE line; on Global it’s missing.
