Overview

The Templar is the tank of Aion 2. He is the only class with a real taunt, Taunt, and every block he lands boosts the whole party’s damage.

He fights with sword and shield at 4 to 5 m. Taunt, Punishment and Doom Shield reach targets up to 20 m away. Most of his damage comes from Judgment, which can only be used in short windows that his shield skills open.

Strengths

  • The only hard taunt in the game
  • Party buff on every successful block
  • Weakens the boss: less attack power and accuracy
  • Two charge skills and a pull for positioning

Weaknesses

  • Main damage only in windows of 2 to 3 s
  • Punishment has to be fully charged by hand
  • Only one break-free skill, which removes neither root nor silence
  • Shares his party slot with the Gladiator

How the Templar works

Three building blocks

  1. Open Judgment windows. Judgment can only be used after a shield skill has been cast. Shield Smite, Warding Strike and Shield Rush unlock it for 2 s, Doom Shield for 3 s. Up to skill level 16, Judgment also has a 5 s cooldown.
  2. Bring Warding Strike back. Vicious Strike, your left click, regenerates 100 MP per hit. With its specialisation from level 12, every hit shortens Warding Strike’s cooldown by 2 s. That opens the next Judgment window sooner.
  3. Fully charge Punishment. The strongest single hit has up to three charge levels and gives you 20 s of [Enforcer]: +200 accuracy, +20% damage amplification in PvE and +10% in PvP.

Always from the front. Fury raises your damage amplification on frontal attacks, and Insulting Roar gives extra attack power on a frontal attack. As the tank you stand in front of the boss anyway, so both are always active.

Active skills and specialisations

With skill points a skill reaches level 10 at most. Everything above that comes from skill nodes on the Daevanion boards, Arcana cards and gear lines.

One specialisation slot opens at skill level 8, a second at 12. Whatever unlocks at 16 takes one of those two slots until level 20 opens a third. Skill and stigma resets are free.

Specialisations the common PvE builds agree on. Unlock level in brackets.

Distributing skill points at level 45

Up to level 45 you get 203 skill points from levelling, none after that. Wisdom stones give one more point each: 58 from your faction’s district quests and 2 each from its 61 sealed dungeons, 383 in total. A skill costs exactly 13 points to level 8 and exactly 21 to level 10.

Passive skills

With points, passives go to level 10. Above that they grow through their Daevanion nodes, the Arcana lines of Bell, Mirror and Chalice, and passive soul binding lines on armour, earrings and necklace.

Stigmas

Stigma slots open at levels 22, 27, 32 and 37. For the first slot you also need the ascension quest after the first story gate, which also gives the first stigma point.

Taunt and Doom Shield are in every common PvE build. For the other two slots there are two camps. disputed

Taunt, Doom Shield, Battlefield Banner, Empyrean Lord’s Punishment. These four are also what most Templars in the Asian version’s rankings use.

Empyrean Lord’s Punishment deals the most stagger damage of all Templar skills and gives a damage buff from level 15. Battlefield Banner converts defence into attack power.

Stigma points after level 45

A level costs 1 point up to level 5, 2 up to 10, 4 up to 15 and 8 up to 20. At level 45 you have 30 points: 29 from levelling and 1 from the ascension quest. That’s enough for one stigma at 10 and three at 5; in variant A that’s Empyrean Lord’s Punishment.

More points come from stigma shards: 200 from the Abyss shop, 35 each from the Shugo Festa and Nightmare shops, plus arena, battlefield and ascension.

  • Taunt to 15 first. Both camps agree on this: Intimidation takes another 10% attack power off the boss, and the cooldown drops to 25 s.
  • Variant A after that: Empyrean Lord’s Punishment to 15 for the damage buff, Battlefield Banner to 15, Doom Shield to 15.
  • Variant B after that: Noble Armor to 15 (Fury ×1.5), Shield of Protection to 10, Doom Shield stays at 5. No stigma needs to go to 20.

Hotbar and macro

The basics of the macro system (blocks, order, binding the macro key) are in the Assassin guide and apply to every class. As a Templar you hold two keys: left click for Vicious Strike and the macro key.

The Judgment row

Both common setups use the same row, from bottom to top: Judgment at the very bottom so it fires first as soon as a window is open. Above it Warding Strike and Shield Smite, which open the window; their order hardly matters. At the top Pummel, which only fires when nothing below is ready.

Buff block: Battlefield Banner. Press it once by hand at the start of the fight; after that the macro fires it whenever it’s ready.

By hand: Punishment, Taunt, Doom Shield, Annihilate, Empyrean Lord’s Punishment.

Punishment doesn’t belong in the macro. A macro step fires it at the first charge level. Held on its own key, it charges to the last level and then fires.

Rotation on the boss

  1. Open from range: fully charge Punishment and fire it at the boss from up to 20 m. That gives you 20 s of Enforcer.
  2. Doom Shield takes you to the boss, protects you with a shield and opens Judgment for 3 s.
  3. Taunt right after, then whenever it’s ready. Intimidation lowers the boss’s attack power and accuracy.
  4. Hold left click and the macro key. The macro fires Judgment in every open window, and Vicious Strike brings Warding Strike back faster.
  5. Between windows, fully charge Punishment again as soon as it’s ready.
  6. Annihilate, then Doom Shield: when Annihilate lights up, press it immediately. From stigma level 5, Doom Shield resets its cooldown and a second Annihilate follows. KR/TW value
  7. Situational: Poach or Shield Rush (after evading) when the boss jumps away. Save Empyrean Lord’s Punishment for stagger checks. Flash Rampage while the boss is staggered.

Tanking

  • Taunt brings the boss back. Its threat depends solely on the damage dealt, so damage gear strengthens your aggro too.
  • Keep hitting. Nine of your attacks generate extra aggro, and the passive Insulting Roar gives +100% aggro amplification.
  • Blocking keeps Fury active. Every block gives you and the party PvE damage amplification for 20 s. Shield of Protection forces a block if you use it.
  • Defensive keys: Warding Strike (via the macro) heals you and gives +20% PvE damage resistance for 10 s. Doom Shield shields 5% of your max HP. Defiance frees you from hard crowd control every 60 s.
  • Stay on the boss: Poach with the specialisation for immune targets pulls you to the boss; Shield Rush brings you back after an evade.

One Templar per party, and no Gladiator with him. Fury doesn’t stack with the Gladiator’s Experienced Counterstrike, and Intimidation doesn’t stack with his Rage Burst. Two Templars pull threat off each other. KR/TW value

Levelling 1–45

General levelling rules (main quest, Odyle Energy, what to save for 45) are in the tips and the Assassin guide. Here’s only what applies to the Templar.

  • Level 1–19: Points into Vicious Strike and Pummel first, then Poach, each to 8 before any skill goes to 10. Vicious Strike refills MP, Pummel spends it.
  • Macro from level 4: one row with Judgment and Shield Smite; from level 8 add Warding Strike, with Pummel on top. Hold together with left click.
  • Level 14: Punishment arrives. Fully charge it by hand and use it as an opener.
  • Stigmas: Slots at 22, 27, 32 and 37. Level with the stigmas you want to use at 45; Doom Shield or Empyrean Lord’s Punishment first.
  • Daevanion: The boards open at 12, 20, 30 and 40; take the levelling nodes from the Daevanion section each time.
  • Questing: Pull with Poach, kill, pull again; with the “reset on defeat” specialisation, Poach is ready again right after every kill. Or gather a group, pop Warding Strike and follow with a fully charged Punishment; both hit up to 4 enemies.
  • Solo: Take an HP absorption, for example on Pummel (Punishing Strike 3%) or Punishment (10%).

Crystal amounts are the same for every class: about 136 from levelling to 45, 316 with all district quests and sealed dungeons of your faction, 366 with the 50 from the Nightmare shop.

Buy the nodes in this order on each board. Route calculated from the Global client.

How to read the boards

  • Every board starts at the starting node in the centre. You can only buy a node that sits directly above, below, left or right of a node you already own; diagonals don't count.
  • Nodes cost 1 to 4 Daevanion points. The grey ones give small base stats, the coloured ones give stronger stats or an extra level for a skill.
  • The numbers are the recommended buying order. The highlighted nodes in between are the cheapest path there; you pick them up along the way.

PvP

Create a separate skill preset for PvP. The Templar fights at 4 m, so PvP is about reaching a target and holding it: Poach pulls it in, Doom Shield and Shield Rush close the gap, stun and knockdown keep it there.

  1. Doom Shield from up to 20 m: charge, 3 s knockdown (75% against players), shield, Judgment open for 3 s. This forces the target to use up its Defiance.
  2. Sit out tenacity. Defiance makes them immune to status effects for 5 s. Keep hitting until it runs out.
  3. Control chain: Poach pulls the target in front of you and roots it for 2 s (75%), Shield Smite stuns for 3 s (60%) and opens Judgment.

Common mistakes

Punishment in the macro

The macro fires it uncharged. Put it on its own key and charge it fully.

Chasing Judgment by hand

Judgment belongs at the very bottom of the macro row. That way it fires in every window a shield skill opens, without you having to count.

Two Templars in one party

They take aggro off each other. Templar and Gladiator don’t complement each other’s buffs either; a party takes one of the two.

Looking for Shield Rush

Shield Rush is only usable after an emergency evade or while flying. Otherwise you reach the boss with Poach or Doom Shield.

Flash Rampage without stagger

It only hits a staggered target. That makes it useless in PvP.

Status and method

Compiled from Global client data, NC’s announcements and the builds of experienced players, cross-checked across several German and English sources. Only what is confirmed goes in. Experienced players disagree on the stigmas, so both variants are given.
